In the Summer, the club hold a social event with bar and refreshments on the Middle Rasen Playing Fields. Normally there are a number of races in the river adjacent to the field. Unlike the NYDay event when you "own" a duck for the race, in summer its like a horse race where you back one or more of the ducks ! Assuming the river is safe, decoy ducks are launched along a stretch of the River Rase with those who backed the winning duck sharing the proceeds. This summers event will be on Sat evening during July. BE SAFE NEAR WATER. If its good weather, why not bring a picnic NYD 2009 , the float off is mid-day from the Mill Bridge and, depending on the volume of water in the river, the race takes 20 - 30 minutes. It can all be easily viewed and followed between Middle Rasen's historic bridges. The 1st, 2nd, 3rd and last duck prizes are awarded as the first 3 ducks and last 3 ducks cross the finish line. Duck numbers will be drawn immediately after the event for all other prizes. Proceeds from the race support and equip the Middle Rasen Cricket and Football Club through the year. Each duck is uniquely numbered, your number is allocated on payment of £1. If you wish, the owner may name their duck and details can be posted on this site. Results are posted as soon after the race as possible. It is the responsibility of the duck owner to make arrangements for the collection of prizes and/or prize money. Summer 2008 The Middle Rasen Summer “Duck Race”, held to raise funds for the village Cricket and Football Teams had the benefit of some fine “seasonal” weather for their evening event on Saturday 12 th July 2008. The first race of the meeting “Power Clean Stakes”, was away smartly at 5.30pm. A total of 26 (win only) bets were placed on the 6 competing ducks. The race was fairly fought with the course marshal, Furz Lloyd, offering a splash by splash commentary on the sound system. As in all races, Pete Dawson was at the rear to ensure even the less reliable decoys got in safely. The winner of the first race was number 3 “Spotless” owned by Julia Salmon. Race 2 the “MOT Stakes”, Winner - duck 3 “Trolley Jack” owned by Alan Cottingham Race 3 “Refrigeration Stakes” Winner - duck 1 “Ice Maiden” owned by Brian Clark Race 4 “Salmon Stakes” Winner - duck 3 “Bricks and Mortar” owned by Steve Cartwright Race 5 “PYO Stakes” Winner - duck 4 “Pick Your Own” owned by Jack Robinson Race 6 “Chairman's Sprint” Winner - duck 5 “Super Sapper” owned by Furz Lloyd Race 7 the “Ledger Stakes” Winner – duck 2 “Profit and Loss” owned by Richard Marshall The final race 8 was an “Auction Handicap “ (bids of just under £60 were taken to become a duck owner in this race) Winner – duck 6 “Lucky Quacker” owned by Richard Marshall A total of 350 “win” bets were placed during the event and there were a total of 54 successful punters sharing the winnings. The event organisers are pleased to say that the evening was a success and it raised £304.20 for the local teams. The members of the Middle Rasen Cricket and Association Football Club thank Sponsors and organisers for putting on an entertaining sporting family evening with refreshments for the village and visitors alike NYD 2007 2007's the race was in perfect weather and under blue skies with the River running well a 1000 ducks were released at Parry's Bridge at 12 noon. Groups of spectators and Duck Owners followed the race along the banks of the Rase to the Low Church Bridge near Naylors Drive. As the yellow hoard appeared near the finishing line they were seen to be pushing some 20 wild ducks forward toward the marshals waiting to net the winners. Avian panic ensued and the mallards being trapped took to the air in frenzied flight as the first 3 ducks crossed the line. Very dramatic and difficult to stage, so much so that most of us missed Colin Pitman, the race organiser who had over stretched, tumbling into the river. NYD 2006 With the winter snow still melting off the Wolds, the Rase was too fast, deep, cold and tricky to allow the safe recovery of the 1085 ducks named and taking part. However, the adjacent Brimmer Beck, being only a 100 yards further down Low Church Road, was quickly established as the race venue. The Beck Bridge in Low Church Road was the ideal meeting place and view point for a launch on the Rase's tributary. The finish was then set twenty minutes down steam before Brimmer Beck reached the swollen Rase. The whole race was able to be followed on foot by the many locals and visitors who came to witness the event. (see photos and Market Rasen Mail story too). This year New Year's Day was a Sunday, so after Sunday service, Linda Patrick with her husband, the reverend Charles Patrick and family were surprised to see "Peking Duck", their duck number 800, going under the bridge toward the finish leading 556 and 265. Charles, the vicar of St's Peter & Paul Church came down in time to watch one family investment maintain its position and the three ducks stay just clear of the field. Needless to say with divine guidance the positions held. See 2006 NYD <<<<<< click here |

The Middle Rasen Cricket and Association Football Club hold a duck race twice a year.
Summer Duck Racing Evening
The club will once again be entertaining the village with an evening of duck racing on Saturday 17th July at the Village Hall Playing Field. A six race card beginning at 5.00pm is envisaged with Honest Alan Pennell the on-course Bookmaker, BBQ and soft drinks also available.
The New Year's Day event is a high spot in the Winter social calendar for the village and team supporters .
2010 saw Douglas Orr's duck "Haggis" win him £100 whilst "Sargeant Scarley" netted £50 for club member Warwick Cairney and "10.5 Tog " won £25 for Senta Martin. The event organizers are pleased with the turn out with around 1000 ducks sold and most of the village and its young people plus a fair number of visitors attending to spectate the event. As the photos show, it was a bright day that benefited from a light crisp covering of snow which appeared overnight. After the race it was straight to the Church Hall for light (hot) refreshments ....... mince pies, tea, coffee and mulled wine. And in the hall the remainder of the prizes were drawn.
The teams give special thanks go to this year's sponsors Nigel Appleyard, Peter Rhodes (Mkt Rasen), Rasen Appliances, Green Grass Contracting and Compleat Care (UK) for generously providing the cash prizes which means that the money from the sale of ducks continues to fund sport in the village.
In 2010 the Duck Race raised just under £1000 for the Middle Rasen Cricket and Football Club. The organisers of the event, volunteers and team members thank the public for coming and supporting their winter event.

Two young visitor show off the Winning Ducks (tagged 915, 472, 384) with Colin Pitman (Race Referee). Work goes on behind to bag up just the many "not so lucky" losing ducks.
